A brilliant idea

I am so hopelessly behind on the fandom, having been gone most of the month while you all were at your most productive. You may notice drive-by comments from me on posts that are weeks old. I'm trying, I'm failing to catch up. It finally occurred to me while brushing my teeth that I could solve my problem by jettisoning HP fandom and moving on to a whole new fandom. But which?

Well, I used to be a huge Nancy Drew reader as a child, so I know an awful lot about that canon. ND fandom has the huge advantage of being nonexistant (AFAIK), so there'd be no posts to even have to track down and catch up on.

But see, I still like slash, and Nancy and her twu luv Ned are so blatantly het that that would never work for me as a writer. But there are her sidekicks Bess and George. Now George is so butch that even I, an oblivious 10 year old, noticed, so there's the femmeslash right off the bat. And the author made up some beards for them, Dave Evans and Burt Eddleton (Ned's good buddies). If these boys are so agreeable to partnering two obvious lesbians all around town, there's not much writing needed to pair them up as well, so there we have it! My new OTP: Dave/Burt!

Come join my fandom! I've scheduled the wankfest for 5 days from today, we'll all part enemies by the end of the day. The whole fandom from inception to ugly explosion shouldn't take more than a week, tops.

On another topic, I'm not getting nearly enough sleep. Oh, I guess that really isn't another topic.

That's great! I was a huge Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys fan. I don't know that I could write ND or HB slash, though. Fabulous concept, however. ;)

Glad that you're back, and your icon is spot on. Once you get famous in fandom, you can never leave- it all goes by too quickly to keep up!! If only one could have a virtual personal assistant to sort through all of the fandom posts and fic and emails, as people do in real life. LOL.

Hope that your sleep patterns improve; mine are rather horrendous right now, not helped in the fact that the students are returning and staying up really late, partying hard across the street. :P

Well, I can't speak to being famous - I think, though, that I have a lot of journals friended that I really do read all the time and once I miss enough of them for a long time, I just feel swamped trying to catch up. And the back-asswards way they are posted makes it worse. I know you know what I mean: the first hint of a new meme begins with a post that says: Oh, I know I'm late with this and everyone has already done this weeks ago, but..." And all the wank is reversed - apologies, then sputtering, then finally the spark that set it off.

Where was I going with this?

Oh, I'm telling you because you know from recent experience what it's like.

But now we're both settling back to not-such-craziness. That's good. I'm ready to cocoon again.

Good. It won't leave much time for re-reading canon. That'd be too horrible. I loved the books dearly as a child, but when I tried to re-read them as an adult... *shudders*

I think I'd assign everyone to read just one of them and multiply it by 53. That should cover it.

Actually, I reread them as an adult about 20 years ago, because I was curious what the experience would be like. I could knock one off in less than half an hour I was also a new mom, so it was nice and brainless and comforting childhood memories. This time, I could see the formula behind the story. But as a child reader, I did learn a little bit about a lot of cultures and places, because each one was set somewhere new. And growing up in the suburban midwest US, I didn't have a broad background - just the opposite.

Bobbsey Twins was my earliest series. It taught me how far short my family experience was from the ideal. And you'd have plenty of twincest in that fandom. But Freddie was such a ponce! Bert was lame, too - Nan was the only one with guts, really.

I'll bookmark it. I've got a recent list of over 50 bookmarks from this month - random stuff. I nearly panicked last night for a moment when I thought my bookmark file had been snuffed - I had no recent backup! But all was fine.

Did you ever read the lesbian comedy parody trilogy about Nancy Clueless? I have them around here somewhere, but Lord knows where. One set also featured the Hardly Boys. I'm pretty sure it was written by friends sitting around with numerous pitchers of margaritas, so some of the jokes get overdone, but it's still great fun!

Did you ever read those books...? Oh, it's been ages since I remember reading them, a friend let me borrow-- and I don't remember if they were any good or what, but they were a parody of Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys. Only everyone was gay. And these were actually published.

Nancy Clue...? And the Hardly Boys. Or something. Pfft. I suppose they were both amusing and disturbing at the time, but I remember thinking this explained a lot about the real books in general, and that amused me so much that I ended up reading them all.

Anyway.

Not only did I have them all, I rebought them as an adult and still have them in the basement. And reread them about 20 years ago. My daughter loves them too, so I pretend we are saving them for when she gets her teaching certificate.

And Dave and Burt have no discernable personalities in canon, so I could go to town with them. OCs almost. Like Brokeback Mountain, but that would be too angsty. I could write Scrapedknuckle Hill.

I have quite the collection of those old yellow-spined hardbacks. I just loved the art. Every now and then I get a yen to try and complete the series. Some of them are even purple spines ;) For reasons I don't understand...
