A brilliant idea

I am so hopelessly behind on the fandom, having been gone most of the month while you all were at your most productive. You may notice drive-by comments from me on posts that are weeks old. I'm trying, I'm failing to catch up. It finally occurred to me while brushing my teeth that I could solve my problem by jettisoning HP fandom and moving on to a whole new fandom. But which?

Well, I used to be a huge Nancy Drew reader as a child, so I know an awful lot about that canon. ND fandom has the huge advantage of being nonexistant (AFAIK), so there'd be no posts to even have to track down and catch up on.

But see, I still like slash, and Nancy and her twu luv Ned are so blatantly het that that would never work for me as a writer. But there are her sidekicks Bess and George. Now George is so butch that even I, an oblivious 10 year old, noticed, so there's the femmeslash right off the bat. And the author made up some beards for them, Dave Evans and Burt Eddleton (Ned's good buddies). If these boys are so agreeable to partnering two obvious lesbians all around town, there's not much writing needed to pair them up as well, so there we have it! My new OTP: Dave/Burt!

Come join my fandom! I've scheduled the wankfest for 5 days from today, we'll all part enemies by the end of the day. The whole fandom from inception to ugly explosion shouldn't take more than a week, tops.

On another topic, I'm not getting nearly enough sleep. Oh, I guess that really isn't another topic.

That's great! I was a huge Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys fan. I don't know that I could write ND or HB slash, though. Fabulous concept, however. ;)

Glad that you're back, and your icon is spot on. Once you get famous in fandom, you can never leave- it all goes by too quickly to keep up!! If only one could have a virtual personal assistant to sort through all of the fandom posts and fic and emails, as people do in real life. LOL.

Hope that your sleep patterns improve; mine are rather horrendous right now, not helped in the fact that the students are returning and staying up really late, partying hard across the street. :P

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2005-08-26 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I can't speak to being famous - I think, though, that I have a lot of journals friended that I really do read all the time and once I miss enough of them for a long time, I just feel swamped trying to catch up. And the back-asswards way they are posted makes it worse. I know you know what I mean: the first hint of a new meme begins with a post that says: Oh, I know I'm late with this and everyone has already done this weeks ago, but..." And all the wank is reversed - apologies, then sputtering, then finally the spark that set it off.

Where was I going with this?

Oh, I'm telling you because you know from recent experience what it's like.

But now we're both settling back to not-such-craziness. That's good. I'm ready to cocoon again.

I'm in!

The whole fandom from inception to ugly explosion shouldn't take more than a week, tops.

Good. It won't leave much time for re-reading canon. That'd be too horrible. I loved the books dearly as a child, but when I tried to re-read them as an adult... *shudders*

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2005-08-26 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
I think I'd assign everyone to read just one of them and multiply it by 53. That should cover it.

Actually, I reread them as an adult about 20 years ago, because I was curious what the experience would be like. I could knock one off in less than half an hour I was also a new mom, so it was nice and brainless and comforting childhood memories. This time, I could see the formula behind the story. But as a child reader, I did learn a little bit about a lot of cultures and places, because each one was set somewhere new. And growing up in the suburban midwest US, I didn't have a broad background - just the opposite.

OMG I loved Nancy Drew & The Hardy Boys...still do of course, one never outgrows that sort of thing. Nancy/Frank/Joe = OT3!! (Seriously, that would be so hot ;P)

Get some sleep, lady!

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2005-08-26 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, me too. Well, not so much the Hardy Boys because they were, well, boys and all. And I liked the Dana Girls, too. And Connie Blair. Connie was a teen model who solved crimes. She was hot.

Sleep. I vow to go to bed early tonight and stop trying to pretend I'm a wild college student.

[identity profile] jonem.livejournal.com 2005-08-25 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh, Nancy Drew! Count me in for the wankfest, I always secretly preferred The Hardy Boys.

Perhaps when the ashes are settled and meltdown complete you could join me in forming a Bobsy Twins fandom? They're very much a non-entity at the moment, slash-wise...

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2005-08-26 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
We could have shipping wars: Nancy/Joe vs. Nancy/Frank. We could make it really ugly and get ourselves on fandom_wank.

Bobbsey Twins was my earliest series. It taught me how far short my family experience was from the ideal. And you'd have plenty of twincest in that fandom. But Freddie was such a ponce! Bert was lame, too - Nan was the only one with guts, really.

I have read Bess/George (or perhaps it was Nancy/George, from Bess's POV? I don't remember). It was pretty good, as I recall - I'll see if I can find the link for you.

And YOU know what fandom I want you to pick up.

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2005-08-26 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, already I recognize your icon - Elizabeth, right? I'm learning.

For the first time in over three weeks, we no longer have suitcases cluttering our bedroom. Yay!

[identity profile] painless-j.livejournal.com 2005-08-25 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
No. Nooooooo! Waaaaaaah! Don't leave Harry and Draco!

On a related note, have you read [livejournal.com profile] zahra5's Italian fic? Just finished, good, languid, sun-warmed.

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2005-08-26 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
We keep missing each other. Right after we commented to each other earlier today, I had to run off unexpectedly.

I'll bookmark it. I've got a recent list of over 50 bookmarks from this month - random stuff. I nearly panicked last night for a moment when I thought my bookmark file had been snuffed - I had no recent backup! But all was fine.

(Icon in your honor. Because it is, you know, a rock.)

[identity profile] painless-j.livejournal.com 2005-08-26 08:13 am (UTC)(link)
:D

[identity profile] neonnurse.livejournal.com 2005-08-25 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you ever read the lesbian comedy parody trilogy about Nancy Clueless? I have them around here somewhere, but Lord knows where. One set also featured the Hardly Boys. I'm pretty sure it was written by friends sitting around with numerous pitchers of margaritas, so some of the jokes get overdone, but it's still great fun!

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2005-08-26 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
No, I had no idea. Other folks are mentioning it - it must be funny.

[identity profile] tipgardner.livejournal.com 2005-08-25 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Hiya! -hugs- I've not forgotten your drabble either, I just haven't figured out what I want yet, although I've been thinking a Draco's hairdresser missing mo.

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2005-08-26 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
And yours is one of the journals I have checked! No rush, of course. But Daniel is remarkably fun to write if you go that way.

[identity profile] tipgardner.livejournal.com 2005-08-26 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Settled then. Just need the hammer of the gods to strike my writing cells now and we'll be off!

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2005-08-26 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
And now I'll be singing "Hammer to Fall" by Queen for the rest of the evening. In about an hour, I won't remember why and I'll be ready to tear out my hair.

[identity profile] tipgardner.livejournal.com 2005-08-26 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Hahahaha! Sorry, Luv. Note to Self: Look in on LJ for reason behind mindless singing of Queen songs. ;P

[identity profile] balfrog.livejournal.com 2005-08-25 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
um... hahah. thanks for the joke. Now catch up quick and jump back in.
:P

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2005-08-26 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
The trouble is, I manage to read 20 journal entries and meanwhile you all pop out 40 more! I'm not making progress. So instead I write odds and ends all over the place in an amazingly scattered fashion.

[identity profile] kay-cricketed.livejournal.com 2005-08-25 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Nancy Drew...? *grins* Oh, did I love that series. I still have half the books, actually, simply for good memories. (I was such a Ned/Nancy shipper back then, it was insane...)

... Dave/Burt? ♥ Okay, I love that.

Did you ever read those books...? Oh, it's been ages since I remember reading them, a friend let me borrow-- and I don't remember if they were any good or what, but they were a parody of Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys. Only everyone was gay. And these were actually published.

Nancy Clue...? And the Hardly Boys. Or something. Pfft. I suppose they were both amusing and disturbing at the time, but I remember thinking this explained a lot about the real books in general, and that amused me so much that I ended up reading them all.

Anyway.

*coughs* So yes. It's nice to see you again! Hope things are going well. ^__^

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2005-08-26 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Not only did I have them all, I rebought them as an adult and still have them in the basement. And reread them about 20 years ago. My daughter loves them too, so I pretend we are saving them for when she gets her teaching certificate.

And Dave and Burt have no discernable personalities in canon, so I could go to town with them. OCs almost. Like Brokeback Mountain, but that would be too angsty. I could write Scrapedknuckle Hill.

[identity profile] kay-cricketed.livejournal.com 2005-08-26 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
*laughs* Oh good, I thought it'd be a shame if you hadn't read them-- I remember really loving some of them. (Actually, I decided to dig them back up from my Bookcase Of Stuff I Haven't Touched in Years. ♥ I had a horrible and completely unexplainable crush on Nancy for ages. Am such a dork that I adore book characters. Sigh.)

Pfft. Poor Dave and Burt. They ARE vague, if I remember right. *has urge to read the books* Urgh.

My favorite was always the one with the kid from India. And the elphant necklace. I don't even remember what happened in it, but I know that. XD

*hugs* Have a great night! ^__^

Hmmmm. What if I ask nicely?

Have you got the stuffing up one end? Because I am made of harder stuff! I have survived the soft cushions!

(Do I get my cup of coffee at eleven?)

[identity profile] abbycadabra.livejournal.com 2005-08-25 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
You're back! *clings*

I don't remember anyone from Nancy Drew except Nancy and the secret passageways. So is my OTP Nancy/Secret Passageway?

That could actually be hot.

[identity profile] phreid.livejournal.com 2005-08-25 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Vaguely reminicent of Squid/Hogwarts, eh?

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2005-08-26 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
You have to admit that HP writers have cut their teeth on unexpected pairings. Nancy/Passageway is the next logical step, IMO.

[identity profile] phreid.livejournal.com 2005-08-26 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Point; my first HP fic was Peeves/George.

I wonder if [livejournal.com profile] anthropomor_fic accepts human/inanimate object? Or, better yet, human/abstract concept. Nancy/deus ex machina, anyone?

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2005-08-26 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
That could actually be very hot. I could see you making it all deep atmosphere and dark meanings.

Doooo eeeeet!

[identity profile] kaalee.livejournal.com 2005-08-26 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
hahahhahahahaha, omg, I love you. That was exactly what I needed to read tonight. ♥

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2005-08-26 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks. I've been in a very odd mood today. I think I'll post the letter I sent to the Trasportation Safety Agency today about the loss of a refrigerator magnet from my luggage and how it relates to the deeper meaning of Lee's loss at Gettysburg.

[identity profile] kaalee.livejournal.com 2005-08-26 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, would you please? I would love to read that. Post tomorrow and I'll crack open a beer and enjoy myself way too much. :)

[identity profile] charlotteschaos.livejournal.com 2005-08-29 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I was totally into Nancy Drew! Haha plump Bess and butch George were totally doing it between "luncheons" ;)

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2005-08-30 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Wasn't it? Wasn't it so so obvious? No wonder we all turned out the way we did.

[identity profile] charlotteschaos.livejournal.com 2005-08-30 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
I have quite the collection of those old yellow-spined hardbacks. I just loved the art. Every now and then I get a yen to try and complete the series. Some of them are even purple spines ;) For reasons I don't understand...
