geoviki: (Lichtenstein - history of slash)
[personal profile] geoviki
Yeah, probably the last one to post about this, huh? And I'll have pictures one of these days - I just have to find the cord to download them.

The take-home point: I had a terrific time!

I seem to have the ability to miss a lot of stuff going on around me, so it was a surprise when I got back and read about some of the not-so-cool things (although I did manage to hear about the pseulebrity who thought it was funny to piss on his sleeping hostesses). Me, I just homed in on my slashy peeps and basically ignored the rest of the stuff. I'm not into wizard rock, I'm not 18, and I'm not into massive drunkenness.

Um, and if I managed to appear as if I was snubbing anyone, I totally did not mean to. It's just that sometimes in big crowds I can't quite get my mind around it all and am easily distracted and lose my focus.

One thing I really liked was that the hotel was right in the city and yet right near a long chain of city parks and waterfront walks. The H/D meetup was at one of them. I came right from Midway Airport on the 'L', towing all my possessions. Nearly missed it, too, becasue the spot given as the meetup had a very loud concert going on. I knew that everyone must have moved somewhere else, but this park has an awful lot of nooks and crannies. Eek, everyone I'd programmed into my cell phone was a Snarrista, so it took many calls to find someone there - thanks, [livejournal.com profile] midnitemaraud_r for guiding me home. I got there just in time to win a beautiful scarf (the very one Draco wears in [livejournal.com profile] emmagrant01's 'Surrender the Grey') knitted by [livejournal.com profile] fiona_fawkes, to [livejournal.com profile] mijan's sadface. Is this a case of the shoemaker's children going barefoot? Fi, get out your needles and cheer her up, 'k?

Then it was off to the hotel to meet up with my roomies, [livejournal.com profile] bethbethbeth (aka the girl of my dreams) and [livejournal.com profile] femmequixotic. (My usual partner in crime, [livejournal.com profile] meri_oddities, couldn't make it this year, more sadface.) And [livejournal.com profile] goseaward, [livejournal.com profile] djinnj, [livejournal.com profile] ze_dragon, [livejournal.com profile] midnitemaraud_r, [livejournal.com profile] titti and other wonderful fen were fixtures in room 2211 all weekend and just made the whole con so much fun. *mwaaah*!

Lemme see, what else?

[livejournal.com profile] cordelia, you so owe me! I signed up for one of the keynote lunches, IIRC on your prompting, and you didn't even come to Chicago! And no one else I knew signed up either, so I ate with people who thought I was some friendless loner and to be pitied. The speaker was one of Scholastic's editors, who felt compelled to self-censor all the details that would have made her talk interesting. And the food, which was described as "pasta" turned out to be macaroni and cheese. With bread, for that carb-loading experience. And cheesecake. Uh, no.

As far as the programming, I enjoyed everything I picked to go to. I went to the Beth/Femme/Djinnj/Goosey presentation on Snape, [livejournal.com profile] furiosity, [livejournal.com profile] titti and Saber Shadow Kitten's on canon-fanon H/D, a nearly-voiceless Mijan's on the future of Harry/Draco, and [livejournal.com profile] amanuensis1's terrific big-room-sized roundtable on Slytherins. [livejournal.com profile] titti organized an impromptu slash panel on Sunday morning (and we were cursing her name (lovingly) at having to get up at 9 AM after three nights of not enough sleep by then.) Then I gave my roundtable (remember that one that was the very last hour of the very last day?) on Albus Severus/Scorpius, which we smashnamed 'Scorbus' and not 'Ass', thank you very much ;-0 I think it went very well. We had people who had interesting viewpoints and a complete lack of people who were airheads who liked to talk anyway.

I crash the Snarry meetup every year because they are all the coolest people. This year's was so well organized, too - the whole restaurant was closed except for us (and a few bemused people ordering take-out) and the cost was reasonable - hell, downright cheap! And I perched on a tall chair and went to the Snaco meetup too.

Plus, I managed to pimp Miyavi very hard to Femme, who bit (hard, I hope!) She's a formidable fan to have in one's court. :-D

In return, I was made a convert to Death Note fandom by [livejournal.com profile] amanuensis1, and looking at everyone else staring in rapt attention at the anime that she had for us, I wasn't the only one. Amy, I bought Book 1 of it the next day and read it on the way home! Yay! Moar!

ETA: Ooh, I forgot to mention the fun we had playing [livejournal.com profile] nimori's invented board game: The Ultimate Mary Sue. The creativity that she put into it was astounding, and we had a blast playing. [livejournal.com profile] ziasudra became Marysuedra, back in Sparkly Poo land with her tiara! And I kept losing all my admirers in catfights to the other Mary Sues- that Ron is a fickle SOB, that's all I have to say. I even lost my original Sueish persona to Amanuensis - I was the Contessa but ended up as..uh, I can't even remember. But she was a drunken lush who couldn't even stand on her own two plastic feet, but spent most of the game face down and skirt up.

I met so many terrific people this time, and I can't begin to name you all, but I love you guys! I'm getting it together to friend ya, but I seem to be coming down with a cold now (figures - no sleep + airport germs = sick, every time). I spent an extra day in Chicago to visit relatives, and that was nice as well.

Phew! Done! FTW!

Hiya,

Has anyone kept a trace of what was said during the 'AS/S - H/D 2.0' panel? I'd like to know what was said, as it would probably give me some ideas for my own WIP.

Thanks

Boy, maybe someone did but I didn't. I was focused on keeping track of the hands up. The conversation broadened to all the next gen as well, since no other panel addressed them.I do remember that we discussed the actual names - how that could be both an asset and a burden. 'Scorpius' reflects family tradition; Albus Sev. focuses on the past, forgiveness, yet hope for the future.

The premise of Death Note is pretty clever, though. I'll keep going - I bought the first manga and read it on the plane on my way home.

The roundtable was definitely fun and was a great way to wrap up the con's formal programming. Scorbus FTW! ;D

I was happy that folks actaully showed up! I was exaused at that point, but everyone was so thoughtful and enthusiastic that I got recharged.

I'm glad I finally put face to name for you! It was a pleasure to meet you. :-)

Oh, it was. And I wore all the clothes that didn't make me look like a middle-aged mom from all the things you taught me. Jewel tones FTW!

Oh, I knew that, really! Lesson #1 - don't post when feverish. Thanks for the fix.

Well, whenever I don't get enough sleep it's almost a guarantee. I'm taking the day off today, though, so maybe I'll get caught up a little. I'm still unpacking.

I was wondering how your roundtable went!

Sounds like so much fun!

Amanuensis converted EVERYBODY to Death Note. I'm on vol. 11 now. But you must get converted to Eroica, too! Seriously! So much lovely fiction in that fandom.

Date: 2008-08-15 04:06 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com
They're both on my list. I did like Eroica from the snippets I read. God, I don't need two new fandoms, but oh, the shiny!

And when are you going to pick up Bun's story from MK, huh?

Date: 2008-08-15 04:50 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] painless-j.livejournal.com
When I finish DN probably. I don't want to read two manga at a time. So I'm reading DN and Eroica fiction, in quantities. After that I'm going to read manga and HP fic, perhaps. Well, different media.

Btw, are you signing up for hd_holidays? I see sign-ups are open.

You know, I was tempted for about a minute, but I decided last year that I wasn't going to sign up for fests. That's because I write so little anymore that I think I need to leave myself open to writing what comes to me and not what I'm prompted to write. Last year's prompt was hard to modify so I'd be satisfied with it (even after you reassured me I could take it on, I still had my doubts).

Hey, it took her almost TWO YEARS to make me a wand. I think she can wait until Christmas, don't you? And pissing pseulebrities? I'm clearly not hearing the good stories.

Ah ha ha ha! Another DN convert! 19 more and I get a toaster. ^_^ Seriously, SO HAPPY YOU LIKE IT!

In less pleased news, I have the cold too. It's inevitable after these things!

From: [identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com
Yeah, I can usually guarantee that if I don't get enough sleep and am around new germs, I'm gonna succumb.

So I'm staying home and maybe I'll get a chance to watch the first DN video I bought. But part of me wants to hook my son on it too, so I might wait until he's available. Oh, but I could watch it twice... hmmm, decisions, decisions.

Hahahaa! I bet you're just sayin' that. I did like the Leaving Breakfast food, though - frittata and crepes and stuff. Of course, I love breakfast a lot.

I'm sorry it's all over. Con drop sucks.

Sounds like I'm the only person who didn't get sick this week. But then, I was sick the week before the con, so I think I've done my time.

And yes to the Death Note. I'm resisting, resisting with all my might as I have two fics to write finish by the end of October. After that I'm going to go on a binge.

And no, you're not the last person to post. I haven't done mine yet!

Scorbus is a bit too much like shortbus for my taste... still, i must admit the as/s thing has lost its lustre.

still, i wish i could have been there.

glad you had fun, tho... did anyone take notes?

Date: 2008-08-17 04:07 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com
As/s isn't too bad to type, but it became clear to me how dumb it sounds when one is saying it out loud and repeatedly.

I didn't take notes and didn't notice anyone else who did. I'm surprised we were all coherent by that time. I was so longing to take a nap round about 3 PM that day but didn't dare. Instead I watched people, um, spread glue on their palms, let it dry, and peel it off. Something about returning to our childhoods. Well, other people were writing drabbles at least.
