I posted this at
lunatunes, but for my friends, I've reposted these songs here.
I've been collecting covers for a while now, and I'm happy to share them with you. I've culled from hundreds; it was fairly hard to choose. Uploads good for a week. Go!
UB40 - I Can't Help Falling in Love With You (Elvis Presley cover) - British reggae-ish.
Tim O'Brien - SeƱor (Tales of Yankee Power) (Bob Dylan cover) - newgrass. Tim did an entire album (Red on Blonde) of Dylan covers, each one better than the next. Here's another, in honor of the resignation of Rumsfeld this week; Masters of War (Bob Dylan cover) .
Randy Crawford - Knockin' on Heaven's Door (Bob Dylan cover) - jazz vocalist.
Roger McGuinn - It's All Right, Ma (I'm Only Bleedin') (Bob Dylan cover) Roger (from The Byrds) and from the soundtrack from 'Easy Rider'.
R.E.M. - Draggin' the Line (Tommy James and the Shondells cover) I'm a big fan of Tommy, first, and Michael and company, second.
Billy Idol - Mony Mony (Tommy James and the Shondells cover) Billy did a lot of covers, I've discovered.
The Jam - I Got You (I Feel Good) (James Brown cover) ...and the Jam did a couple of great r&b covers as well.
Tiga and Jake Shears (from the Scissor Sisters) - Hot in Herre (Nelly cover). I was blasting this into my brain a few months ago in the Las Vegas airport. It fits.
Robbie Williams - Freedom (George Michael cover)
Bauhaus - Ziggy Stardust (David Bowie cover)
The Bangles - Hazy Shade of Winter (Simon & Garfunkle cover) - aac version
The Bangles - Hazy Shade of Winter (Simon & Garfunkle cover) - MP3 version
Cyndi Lauper - Midnight Radio (from 'Hedwig and the Angry Inch')" From 'Wig In A Box', a cover CD of the soundtrack.
Boy Kill Boy - It's Different for Girls (Joe Jackson cover)
Roxy Music/Bryan Ferry - Jealous Guy (John Lennon cover). I read that Bryan is most known for this cover song. Funny, I know him from earlier stuff.
The Delays - Beautiful Boy (John Lennon cover). I've fallen in love with this group. That's all.
Feelin' Alright - Joe Cocker (Dave Mason/Traffic cover). Sometimes an artist makes a song so much their own we forget it was a cover in the first place.
Creed - Riders on the Storm (The Doors cover) I love the original, so ipso facto I love the cover, too. This is from Jo Whiley's Live Lounge on the BBC. Artists invited to the show come up with covers to perform, some truly teeth clenching (Elbow's 'Independent Woman' for example), and some terrific (Scissor Sisters cover of Franz Ferdinand's 'Take Me Out'). You've seen a lot of these covers on this forum but you may not have known it.
Take Me To the River - Annie Lennox (Al Green cover) , from 'Medusa', which was entirely covers.
Take Me To the River - Talking Heads (Al Green cover) . This was the first version I ever heard, although I was an Al Green fan by osmosis from my older sister.
And just for completeness, here's the original: Take Me to the River - Al Green
k.d. lang - After the Gold Rush (Neil Young). 'Hymns from the 49th Parallel' was entirely covers of Canadian artists.
Jonathan Rhys Meyers & Venus in Furs - Baby's On Fire (Brian Eno cover). The soundtrack from 1998's 'Velvet Goldmine' was almost entirely glam rock/punk covers. Didn't know Jonathan could sing, did you?
Gwyneth Paltrow & Huey Lewis - Cruisin' (Smokey Robinson cover) Also in the 'actors who can sing' list. Who'd a thunk it?
Oingo Boingo - You Really Got Me (Kinks cover). Danny Elfman went on to score movies.
Will Young - Love The One You're With (Steven Stills cover). Will was the first winner of 2003's Pop Idol, the British prototype for American Idol.
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Higher Ground (Stevie Wonder cover). Hell, I could have filled a post with Motown covers alone!
George Michael & Mary J. Bligh - As (Stevie Wonder cover).
Michael McDonald - Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm Yours (Stevie Wonder cover) Former singer for Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers, he's been doing a lot of Motown cover albums lately.
Jonny Lang - Livin' For the City - (Stevie Wonder cover). I just saw Jonny in concert - he gives one of the best concerts I've ever seen, and I've seen, among others, The Grateful Dead, Miles Davis, Bruce Springsteen, and The Beatles.
Dusty Springfield - Am I the Same Girl (Barbara Acklin cover). Here's an interesting cover - this song has a different title depending on whether or not it's got lyrics. The lyric-less version is called 'Soulful Strut.'
Laura Nyro - La La Means I Love You (Delfonics cover) Laura Nyro has been a favorite singer of mine for 30 years. If you've never heard of her, this is your big chance. She wrote a lot of late 60's hits you probably know.
Dishwalla - Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go (Soft Cell/Gloria Jones cover). A cover of a cover, since 'Where Did Our Love Go' (also on the longer Soft Cell version) is a Supremes cover.
Depeche Mode Soft Cell - Tainted Love (Gloria Jones cover).Compare and contrast these two covers of Tainted Love.
verdenia pointed out this is a Soft Cell version.
Extra credit for more covers dragged into the discussion and posted!
Whew! Now I must stop.
ETA: Scissor Sisters - Take Me Out (Franz Ferdinand cover) for
tipgardner
Also check for many more covers in the comments!

Date: 2006-11-11 06:14 am (UTC)Here's Barbra's version: Barbra Streisand - Stony End
And here's Laura's: Laura Nyro - Stony End
Laura wrote a lot of songs that most people don't realise were covers. She died way too young, as well.

Date: 2006-11-11 11:16 pm (UTC)I also snagged the Talking Heads cover of 'Take Me To The River', as I adore the Annie Lennox version. I had 'Medusa' on in the office only yesterday.
As for The Delays, I sense the influence of a mutual acquaintance...

Try Laura Nyro. You may like that.
Look at all the short sentences. Can you tell I'm uploading your songs as I post?
