[livejournal.com profile] painless_j and I challenged each other to come up with an LJ post of cover songs for your uploading pleasure. It was a hard choice, because I have hundreds of covers, but here are some I really like - first the original, then the cover.

Son of a Preacher Man - Dusty Springfield
Son of a Preacher Man - Cam Clarke, who is male, so...yeah.

La La Means I Love You - The Delfonics
La La Means I Love You - Laura Nyro

Draggin' the Line - Tommy James and the Shondells
Draggin' the Line - R.E.M.

I Got You (I Feel Good) - James Brown
I Got You (I Feel Good) - The Jam

Higher Ground - Stevie Wonder
Higher Ground - Red Hot Chili Peppers

L.A. Woman - The Doors
L.A. Woman - Billy Idol

I posted original/cover versions of "Baby's on Fire" the other day, which are still active. Also from "Velvet Goldmine":
20th Century Boy - T Rex
20th Century Boy - Placebo

While I'm on about music, does anyone have Tom Tom Club's Genius of Love they could share? Snagged! Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] oxoniensis. I used to own the vinyl version. And it's topical - they namecheck James Brown!

Hee, thank you!

Funny, I like Billy Idol's version better than The Doors'. Maybe 'cos it's not my favourite song of the latter.

Didn't like RHCP's cover. But then I'm no fan of theirs, I like about 2 songs.

Placebo's cover, IMO, is rather plain, similar to the original. I like the original better :D Same about James Brown :) I like it when covers are more different, or something.

Billy does quite a few covers. I like the Door's version, 'cause I used to crank it up loud to go driving in my first car (A Dodge Dart, which is hardly a speed machine, but there you go).

The Placebo cover was the one used in "Velvet Goldmine" - don't know why, because the T Rex version is better, I agree.

I love the Jam, though! I also have a nice cover by them of "Heat Wave", an old Motown song.

You mean like this one (to match your pair on your post):

Here's Genius of Love - http://download.yousendit.com/AF5F0BF42395DAF2

So many songs I only have on vinyl or tape - it's a shame, I just never listen to them any more.

Oh, you are a treasure! Thank you so much. It's been a long time since I've even heard this song, but I was listening to...something...that reminded me of it and I got this craving.

my dh just told me about a podcast he listens to called coverville (coverville dot com) -- they just talk about and play, er, covers. :) Anyway, he played a cover of Sea of Love done by Tom Waits, and it was so fantastic and not at all like the original, very bluesy and seductive.
