It came to me while shoveling snow, actually, that I may have figured out the first fan fiction in American literature. It was written by one of my favorite authors. Ready?

A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court by Mark Twain Yeah? You agree?

And it's a Mary Sue. Or a Gary Stu to be exact.

The original fantasy, of course, are the tales surrounding King Arthur and the knights of the Round Table. Probably one of the only extant fandoms available at the time (1889 to be exact).

And Twain's hero (this is a first person narrative) concludes this fic by saving everyone using modern (for the time) warfare. Plus, by this time Twain was also himself living in Connecticut.

Mark Twain would have been great with his own LiveJournal. If you are not familiar with him beyond the Tom Sawyer/ Huck Finn books, he is one of the first modern humorists. In fact, you'd be hard pressed to separate him from someone like Dave Barry if it weren't for the period references.

Enough Twain drooling. Except I think he probably would have shipped Lupin/Snape. Maybe Lupin/Black for variety. He wouldn't have much truck with Draco.
