Looking for Wizarding World vs. Muggle concepts on rule of law

I know I've read some good meta discussions on the differences between the Wizarding World and ours concerning the rule of law, the differences between the two views of rights and responsibilities of the governing bodies, and similar topics. But I can't find them. So if you've written on this or some similar topic, could you link it here? Anything about views on how Wizarding government functions would really help. Many thanks.

All this is in support of a collaboration on a novel-length H/D fic that I'm co-writing with [livejournal.com profile] emmagrant01 and [livejournal.com profile] abbycadabra, with art by the new fanartist [livejournal.com profile] blackboggart. We're all excited and squeeful about this - I mean, we're alike in many ways, but each of us brings to the table someting really unique, too. I've never written anything jointly, so I'm interesting in learning as much as I can about the way Abby and Emma's minds work. And to have an artist working along with us, riffing off our ideas, and vice versa - just too cool, don't you think?

I'll have to email them, but I've done one for Nimbus and one for Accio, and [livejournal.com profile] lexin has opined over at Red Rose Press about the civil service and the Ministry of Magic.

That'll be perfect! I meant to get thinking about this theme more this week, but got sidetracked rushing out a fic for a challenge that was due Thursday. Which I managed to finish - Thursday. They say it's the adrenalin rush that causes us to do this sort of thing to ourselves. (and in the story I further your views on the Weasley twins...the challenge archive opens tomorrow, I think).

Wow. *iz excited to see collaboration*

I have been really sour on the H/D lately. New stuff, that is. It has to do with HBP. Doesn't mean I wouldn't be interested in something you 3 write *nods*.

Cheers!

It'll take a while before we have a product. In the meantime, I think you'll get a big fix of new H/D in the immediate future, including a new story I wrote this week. Watch for more news.

I'm VERY excited to see/read what you three come up with! Sorry I don't have any links to share :(

I think this project will be fun, with the people involved. I'm looking forward to it.

Very cool! And I'm intrigued with the idea you're playing with about the differences in law ;)

I'm big on backstory, and this is a topic I've been interested in after reading a few meta posts on it.

As does your icon! That's my favorite shot from the whole book.

You may want to check out the essay here at the Red Hen site. This author (whose lj name is [livejournal.com profile] jodelfromaol, I think, has written an enormous number of well-reasoned, carefully argued essays on a large variety of canon topics. Enjoy.

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2005-09-04 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that is going to be helpful, especially with all the references back to canon. Thanks for pointing that one out. If you come across any others in the next months, keep me in mind.

Here from H_T

Well, it was really more of a rant than an essay on comparing Muggle ethics and laws to wizarding, but I did post something here back in June. :)

Yes, this is good. What I'm trying to do is get a feel for what makes the Wizarding world different from ours in terms of law/leadership/power/authority. From there, I can make a case for how they'd be likely to respond to the situation we're devising. That way, the backstory has some logical foundation. You do the same thing for your arguments on safety and responsibility, so it's good to see an example. Thanks.

Well in my legal history lecture today I found out that during the Anglo-Saxon period, kings ruled their regions using the Witenagemot, an assembly of the wisest in the land.

I thought it was funny at the time.

You probably know this one, but if you don't it is well worth the long read: [livejournal.com profile] pharnabazus wrote Expecto Patronus: or How the Wizarding World Really Works. The first of I think 11 parts is at http://www.livejournal.com/users/pharnabazus/715.html. He begins, "It is only since Order of the Phoenix appeared that it has become clear to everyone that the Wizarding World, for all the wonders it contains, is in fact an extremely lawless place."

[livejournal.com profile] no_remorse later wrote an essay Bowling for Hogwarts: Or How the Wizarding World Works, which you can find at http://www.livejournal.com/users/no_remorse/80777.html. She begins, "... there is just chaos, anarchy and lawlessness disguised superficially with bureaucracy and the pretension of justice."

Aaagh, got the ULR for [livejournal.com profile] pharnabazus's series wrong. Try this: http://www.livejournal.com/users/pharnabazus/715.html#cutid1

Oh, both of those are exactly what I was looking for! Thanks so much for pointing me to them - appreciate it.

OMG I KNEW IT WAS GOING TO BE H/D GOODNESS!

So so sorry there, it's just this is the first detail of any kind I've found about the collab, which of course I had already heard about. And yes, I think it's going to be "too cool" and then some. Checked out [livejournal.com profile] blackboggart and squeed a little more, because she's darn good. Very excited!

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2005-09-08 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Did you doubt it for a moment? I don't think any of us has written much else. I have one whopping Draco/Remus story to my name. Well, Abby wrote some het before she saw the light.
