Redemption and Mad Martha
Sep. 17th, 2004 05:32 pmOkay, after yesterday's post, I need to somehow salvage my image as an articulate, thoughtful, somber, intellectual slash writer, and not as some pervy weirdo who's into men in dresses (barely).
This is how I'm gonna drag my reputation, gasping for breath, up out of the gutter. Recs!
I might have mentioned that the very first HP story I ever read was the middle of some very graphic Draco/Harry/Voldemort slash thing that I Googled by entering "Harry Potter" and "Parseltongue". It homed right in on some since-undiscovered scene (well, not that I ever retraced those steps) where Draco is holding Harry in position for Voldie's pleasure while murmuring encouragements...oh, wait, I'm supposed to be redeeming myself here. It was shocking.
I decided this bore further investigation (my scientific mind comes to the forefront).
Fortunately, in short order I was set aright by stumbling on some truly terrific fanfics. And one of the very first was Mad Martha's The Lodger.
To this day, she's still one of my favorite HP authors. There are two big reasons: she knows how to tell a story with attention to plot and detail, and she includes so much of the British atmosphere.
I worry that too many of you don't read her stories, because she's not a regular on the LJ circuit. She's got an LJ account, and I saw her post a comment - once - on someone else's journal, but for the most part, she doesn't participate here. Most of you have read her fics on FA, I suspect, but her main repository is her Yahoo Group - madmarthafics . If you haven't joined a Yahoo Group, you should; eventually you'll find something that is nowhere else - like this site.
So. The Lodger. Harry/Draco. One of my all-time favs, but bet you didn't know she's got ficlets and cookies from the Lodger Universe. The short story about Harry and the succubus - only available there. And although Harry makes light of the succubus in The Lodger, it's a wrenching story.
Today I finally finished her Two Households, Both Alike in Dignity, (Harry/Ron and Remus/Sirius) not because I didn't want to read it, but because I wanted to savor it. Like tucking away a Godiva chocolate. It's got a premise - what if Harry had shaken Draco's hand on that fateful day - that I've not seen treated so well elsewhere.
Her writing is not particularly sexually graphic, but it doesn't matter. The emotional hook is there.
Off with you now...go read. (And look around the "Files" section carefully, because the stories are not always where you'd expect them to reside.)

Date: 2004-09-17 06:29 pm (UTC)I do think the good thing about her being at ff.net, though, is that it gives people a chance to read some of her work before joining the mailing list. Some people might not want to join a mailing list without having read the author yet. Since someone could just post a quick link to a story there, it's a way to introduce her to someone.

Date: 2004-09-17 07:30 pm (UTC)am very much a fan of the stoic dignity in The Lodger-
and read 3 or so of the Lodger ficlets on MM's ff.net page, but I don't quite remember there being a incubus one- lovely Saturday night search ahead now.
.

Re: hey
Date: 2004-09-18 01:22 pm (UTC)The reason it's not on ff.net or FA is because, although I call it "R" on Skyehawke, on these other two repositories it would be considered NC-17, which they do not accept. And I'm loath to rewrite the sex scenes for that.
I think word of mouth is doing a fine job of getting my story read. At least I hope so.
