The news du jour is that someone has postulated the discovery of JKR herself, albeit cleverly disguised, on mugglenet, and logged it here:

I don't know if it is or isn't; I tend to be really gullible (I probably shouldn't admit that) and think it could be. JKR has admitted lurking there in the past.

I've seen people ask from time to time: do you suppose JKR reads fanfic? My answer: not on your life. I think she's smart, has smart lawyers, or both (i.e., she's not gullible). Any hint of a parallel plot will bring out writers from the woodwork claiming she stole their idea from ff.net. She needs to stay clean. At least until the end of book 7.

After that, though...

So let's indulge our little JKR fantasies, shall we? You know you want to! Travel with me into the future, a few years down the pike. JKR sends you and me a desperate query - I'm free to read any fan fiction I like now, dear [livejournal.com profile] geoviki. What would you suggest?"

Well, JKR - can I call you Jo? - here's my list of stories that will blow you away. These fics are guaranteed to fill you with genuine admiration at their direction, maturity, creativity, and plain good writing. You don't mind a bit of slash, do you? Although these are all very mild, if mentioned at all.

Oh, and Jo? Don't forget to send feedback to the authors -- it's the polite thing to do, you know.

The Reader by Aja - here

A stunning, slowly enthralling description of Harry's anger, the reality of war, and how just a small offer of hope can make all the difference.

The First Piece of Silver and its sequel Before the Cock Crow by Isis - here

Okay, Jo, you really haven't given us enough backstory on the Marauders, so Isis had to do it for you. And a terrific job she made of it, too. Peter Pettigrew is so much more than a funny, rat-faced caricature in the PoA film.

Nightswimming, the first chapter of Origins by Ivy Blossom - here

Detail, detail, detail. You can feel the heat of summer, the camaraderie of school friends, and the distance of a lone observer. Most readers don't consider this as a stand-alone; but then, I'm not most readers!

Lust Over Pendle by A.J. Hall. A close second is her The Kindly Ones .
LOP and TKO

Listen, Jo, my LJ readers can all tell you how much I adore this writer and this world. So don't argue with me on this. You will never read anything more carefully considered and crafted than this. (Just between you and me, she's even a better writer than you are).

Third Time's the Charm by Helen. here

Helen has such insight into the underdeveloped communication skills of many of your characters, Jo. Her awkward Snape and her persistent Lupin will draw you in from the very beginning. She's the best writer of true-to-life conversation that I can think of.

The Lodger by Mad Martha - here

[oh, and Jo? Many readers don't know that Mad Martha has written 6 ficlets (in two directories) from her Lodger Universe, but you have to join her Yahoo group here to read them, here. One of these is the mysterious tale of Harry's past loves, and it's just heartbreaking. Go on, join and read.

There's not a false character or scene in this fic. It's so gentle; sweet, sad, hopeful, lovely. One of my all time favorites.

Okay, now it's your turn. Rec Jo some fic. And not your favorites, necessarily. She needs to be shown the depth, breadth, and pinnacles of fanfic writing that we all know and love!

I'm so glad I talked about fics to rec. I've heard of this one but haven't read it yet. Guess I'll just pencil it in for this weekend's entertainment, then!

can i tell you how happy i was to see this? i was just feeling like i was running out of good stuff to read, and figuring i was going to have to do some hunting, and you've just given me enough to last for a good long time....

as for me, i'd rec a few....

transfiguration
was one of my first novel-ish hp stories, and i still love it. resonant does a brill job in her post-war problems fic.

i have two shorter sirius/remus angst favorites:
essence of black by [livejournal.com profile] thrihyrne and sing my heart by [livejournal.com profile] anniesj. both are achingly beautiful and the second even includes the beattles...

Seven Things That Never Happened at Hogwarts on Valentine's Day, or Maybe They Did is a nice look at the seven valentines during the marrauders time at hogwarts.

lastly i'd have to rec something from each of my two favorite ladies, [livejournal.com profile] olivia_lupin and [livejournal.com profile] dragon_charmer - unfortunately they are both wip's right now, still [livejournal.com profile] olivia_lupin's full spectrum and [livejournal.com profile] dragon_charmer's resolution
are both v. interesting.

Transfigurations is a big 10-4 good buddy! I love that one, too. And I just found Sing My Heart a few weeks ago and loved that. There are some on your list I haven't read yet, so I'm excited to check them out.

Let's see...

If you want amazing characterizations of a quick-witted Draco, anything written by Maya (http://lasairandmaya.com/) is fantastic. All of her stories are outrageously facetious and positively breathtaking. However, if you want a dark fic from her, Your Every Wish (http://www.lasairandmaya.com/youreverywish.html) really makes you think.

I find Two Lost Souls (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/790457/1/) by Amalin to be kind of underrated, and that's kind of shocking to me since it's wonderfully written. Lyrical, heartbreaking, it's a journey through time, a seasonal story of Harry and Draco through Hogwarts and after the war.

Redeeming Time (http://www.vidweasels.com/Minx/Door_to_River/redeeming1.html) by Minx is another seasonal story in four parts. It's a Marauder's era story, not quite novel length, but quite long nonetheless. It's James' POV, with blatant hints of Sirius/Remus, while the main focus is generally James/Lily, seeing as he is the narrator. Witty and charming, definitely worth a read.

More Marauder's era stories include the Levity Series (http://glitterati.illuminatedtext.com/writing/hp/index.html) by [livejournal.com profile] lupercali. Her characterization of Remus is spot on, in my book. You can't help but love him. My favorite out of all her work would have to be Levity (http://glitterati.illuminatedtext.com/writing/hp/levity.html). JUST READ IT.

Okay that's all I've got right now. If I think of more, I'll definitely comment and leave a note. :)

I agree on Maya's fics - I've read them all and think she's just a gifted writer.

I think you're right about Two Lost Souls, too. And I think I like the less angsty ending she wrote for Armchair - it's on the Yahoo Group, somewhere under files. I think the original ending, with its explicit darkness, tends to make readers less willing to rec it, but her writing is very poetic.

And the last two I haven't read, so thanks!

I haven't read that one - this posting is pulling a lot of terrific suggestions for me to read. And I read a lot of fanfic, so I'm always looking for something new and good.

(Warning: sometimes I whine a bit here, but I usually warn you when I'm about to go off on a rant).

I was daydreaming the other day and asked myself exactly that. What fanfic I would rec to J.K to make her understand the power of fanfic and just how her characters can be incredibly well developed, and I came to the same conclusion as you : I wouldn't necessarily recommend my favorite ones.

I'm glad you chose especially the first chapter of Origins, because this one especially was the first piece of fanfic to really blow me away. I've read hundreds of fics since and it's still one of the very best.

I guess Jo wouldn't have much time to give to fanfic so I would rec her something relatively short :

Love Ridden (http://glassesreflect.net/hd/loveridden1.html), by Romie
I liked the atmosphere of the whole fic, but I especially loved the part where one of Draco's usual tantrums is described from the inside, well, un-described would be more appropriate.

Four Letter Word (http://bloom.velveteen.net/four.html), by [livejournal.com profile] weatherby
One of my all time favorites.
Jo probably wouldn't appreciate to read something so sexually explicit about Harry because she likes to respect his privacy, but this wouldn't be an example of what she could have done, more an example of what exceptionally good fanficcers can do with her characters. They make them real.

And I would definitely recommend [livejournal.com profile] nocturne_alley, hoping that maybe if thousands of people beg her to read it, she would take the time to do so.

Oh, I like Four Letter Word as well. Good choice!

The other one I haven't read, but I will now. Sounds interesting by your description.

I think at one time or another all of us fanpersons have wanted to take Jo by the hand and tell her, "Look at this! See what you started!" She'd be surprised at the intensity and depth, I'm convinced.

[livejournal.com profile] shoebox_project by [livejournal.com profile] ladyjaida & [livejournal.com profile] dorkorific. One of the BEST fics I have ever read, it's pure genius. MWPP, Sirius/Remus fic, that is just so amazing.

Just read it, even if you are not a Sirius/Remus shipper (I'm not), you will not be dissapointed.

:3 I saw this from [livejournal.com profile] quickquote and I must reply to this because I'm 100% positive on what I would pick.

I would pick [livejournal.com profile] shoebox_project because it's an extremely enjoyable fan fiction for any HP fan. It's set in Marauder times, and all though implying Sirius/Remus and having that little tension.. it's still not. It's still just worth for everything.

My friend, [livejournal.com profile] latara said she felt like writing J.K. and showing her Shoebox Project so she could make it canon. x) I whole heartedly agree with that.

So weee.

It hardly needs saying, but shoebox (http://www.livejournal.com/community/shoebox_project/). Always and forever.

In fact, she should adopt it and get the whole thing published on nice paper. It doesn't contradict canon or anything.

A bit OT...

I get more requests for this! I'm happy to share. This young man is the lovely and talented Robert Boyd Holbrook, a rather enticing model. He has a yahoo group here:

That you can join. A bevy of beautiful images is available under "photos", a few more under "files".

I tarted this icon up on Photoshop.
