Jan. 21st, 2007 11:59 amI don't think I'm unusual in that I still haven't finished all the wonderful fanfic written in December, but I just spent a terrific evening reading one of the best stories I'm likely to come across:
Infinite Shadow of the Soul by the incomparable
femmequixotic.
What a story! God, what a story.
First, there's the plot. It starts immediately after book 6 with Snape and Draco and goes on from there. And so much of the plot dovetails so seamlessly with canon that it's hard to believe Femme's not channelling JKR's book 7. But even better, it incorporates actual history, in this case, pre-Revolutionary Russia circa 1916. And then makes that fit into canon as well! I haven't seen such a creative plot in ages and ages.
Second, there are the characters. Femme, of course, writes one of the most true-to-canon Dracos ever, and this one's probably her best. It's exactly how I see him in years to come - his reactions, his emotions, his thoughts. Add to this a compelling Snape plus true-to-life historical figures and minor HP charactes, and the whole story springs into rich life.
Third, there's Femme's descriptive writing. It's so immediate and detailed that it pulls you in and won't let go. It took me a while to get warm again after reading about the cold St. Petersburg winter.
It's a shade under 55K words, so give yourself some time to read it. Believe me, you won't be sorry. It's one of those stories that makes you say, "Ooh, the next time someone disses fanfic, I'm gonna make them read this! That'll shut them up!"
Okay, if that wasn't riches enough, she also wrote a terrific H/D for hd_holidays that also blew me away:
Gone Down the Angel on a Lonely Night by
femmequixotic
Again, nice and plotty, with superb characterizations and that compelling attention to detail that is her hallmark. She gives you just enough backstory to make it seem part of the wider world, and the pacing is perfect. I noticed in the comments that even people who don't like Draco, who don't like H/D, who don't like whatever...they all like this. There's a reason for that - Femme's one of fandoms best writers.
