I picked up "The Best American Erotica 2002" at a used booksale at work (hmmm, wonder whose it was?) I've even heard of some of these authors (Jane Smiley, Poppy Z. Bright). But you know what? Most of the stories were merely mediocre, especially when I compare them to many of my recent reads by some of the terrific writers we have in fandom. I kept finishing up a story and thinking: what was the point of that? PWP, pure and simple, and it seems like the pros have a thing for rimming these days, too. Some of the stories just seemed rather pointless - there was a starting and stopping place, but no real message except to be writing about teh sex. Ho hum.

Segue! Segue! Time for an author rec.

I read other LJ posts/comments that bemoan how hard it is for new authors to pick up the audience they deserve. So consider this me beating the drum, although for this author, 'new' is a relative term - she's been online and writing for over a year. It just took me all this time to get over my horrible jealousy that someone so much younger - 19! - can write so damned well (and bah, she's probably really pretty, and I know she's witty). In some ways she reminds me of her fellow countrywoman, [livejournal.com profile] mistful.

I'm talking about [livejournal.com profile] scoradh, who also posts under the lj name [livejournal.com profile] rainspots. ETA: I forgot to mention she's Scoradh on Skyehawke as well as Alvira on FictionAlley.
