What a short, strange trip it's been
Jun. 30th, 2004 07:16 pmHappy Fanniversary to Me (a blatantly stolen phrase).
A mere year ago, I found Harry Potter fan fiction.
I was coming off the high of reading OotP, and decided to Google the words "Harry Potter" and parseltongue. What popped up, I know now, was a rather graphic Draco/Harry/Voldemort NC-17 page from some to-this-day unknown fic. My first reaction: can they post this? Ha!
I don't know why HP fanfiction came to me so out of the blue. Twenty years ago I wrote Star Trek fanfiction, back when exchanges were through mail or in person at conventions. Back when there was only the original ST to consider.
I fell into the HP fandom. Hard. I read everything I could find, beginning with the common gateway fic "Irresistible Poison". Other early favorites (read that first month) that I still adore: The Lodger by Mad Martha; Transfigurations by Resonant; After the Flood by Cassie Claire; Love Under Will by Aja.
I wrote my first HP story a mere 2 weeks after finding HP fandom - the wordy, Snape-centric gen fic, "Chaining". I recycled that fic as a chapter of A Thousand Beautiful Things.
thistle_chaser plucked Chaining out of the plethora of Fiction Alley stories and recced it on her LJ.
isiscolo tracked me down, praised me, and gave me an LJ code (yeah, such heroin-dealer behavior: the first time's free, and then you pay and pay :-) She is my mentor, beta, and friend.
In one year I've written 2 short stories, a longer story, and a novel.
In one year, I've read hundreds of your stories and delighted in your beautiful art. I've pondered your intelligent essays. I've laughed and cried over events in your life.
In one year, I've learned more about the Harry Potter canon than I ever thought possible.
In one year, I've learned about WIPs, GIPs, and memes. In one year, I now know what <3 is and what OMGWTF stands for. I know that Draco's eyes are grey. I know what a beta is and why I need a Brit-picker.
I've friended 100 of you, and many of you have friended me back. And when RL events threaten to overwhelm me, I've learned that you are real people out there and that you care.
It's been a wonderful year.
