Happy Fanniversary to Me (a blatantly stolen phrase).

A mere year ago, I found Harry Potter fan fiction.

I was coming off the high of reading OotP, and decided to Google the words "Harry Potter" and parseltongue. What popped up, I know now, was a rather graphic Draco/Harry/Voldemort NC-17 page from some to-this-day unknown fic. My first reaction: can they post this? Ha!

I don't know why HP fanfiction came to me so out of the blue. Twenty years ago I wrote Star Trek fanfiction, back when exchanges were through mail or in person at conventions. Back when there was only the original ST to consider.

I fell into the HP fandom. Hard. I read everything I could find, beginning with the common gateway fic "Irresistible Poison". Other early favorites (read that first month) that I still adore: The Lodger by Mad Martha; Transfigurations by Resonant; After the Flood by Cassie Claire; Love Under Will by Aja.

I wrote my first HP story a mere 2 weeks after finding HP fandom - the wordy, Snape-centric gen fic, "Chaining". I recycled that fic as a chapter of A Thousand Beautiful Things.

[livejournal.com profile] thistle_chaser plucked Chaining out of the plethora of Fiction Alley stories and recced it on her LJ. [livejournal.com profile] isiscolo tracked me down, praised me, and gave me an LJ code (yeah, such heroin-dealer behavior: the first time's free, and then you pay and pay :-) She is my mentor, beta, and friend.

In one year I've written 2 short stories, a longer story, and a novel.

In one year, I've read hundreds of your stories and delighted in your beautiful art. I've pondered your intelligent essays. I've laughed and cried over events in your life.

In one year, I've learned more about the Harry Potter canon than I ever thought possible.

In one year, I've learned about WIPs, GIPs, and memes. In one year, I now know what <3 is and what OMGWTF stands for. I know that Draco's eyes are grey. I know what a beta is and why I need a Brit-picker.

I've friended 100 of you, and many of you have friended me back. And when RL events threaten to overwhelm me, I've learned that you are real people out there and that you care.

It's been a wonderful year.

Happy Fanniversary to you!!!

It's been a pleasure getting to know you, though I do have to admit, I've been feeling guilty every time I see your name, b/c I finally got a chance to read your novel, adored the heck out of it, and never properly feedbacked. I totally intend on doing it within the next decade, though :-)

I forbid you to feel guilty! I accept "adored the heck out of it" as legit feedback! Thanks. (Although if you care to elaborate some day, I won't find it amiss...)

It's a pleasure to know you, too!

Smooches to you, dear! Happy Fanniversary, and may you have many more rewarding years as a HP nutcase.

And you even used a Draco icon! Oh, his lovely, delicate, plastic yellow hands, his (not)soft plastic white locks, his perpetually arched, painted-on eyebrows, his...broomstick.

A million thanks to you, dear Isis, for showing me the ropes. Even if you call me names...

Oh, happy fanniversary! You know, this is around my one-year faniversary for HP, too. I read all five books while on vacation last summer, and I know it was around now, because I started reading PS/SS just after OOTP was released. And I didn't get up the nerve to write anything in this fandom until last February! ;-)

Congratulations! Oh, btw, today is [livejournal.com profile] claraswift's one year fanniversary of being in the Star Wars slash fandom, as well.

That surprised me. I could have sworn you'd been around longer than I had. And I was really surprised to see that you hadn't written anything before February! You sure hit the scene with a bang. Well-deserved, too.

Were you ever active on MA too? Your name was familiar to me before I started communicating with your personally, and before your ever commented on LMH.

It is wonderful. I have a life now. Okay, so it's an online life, but still...

And I remember that you were one of the very first people to friend me. Thanks for sticking with me so long, even through all my fluffy endings.

Found you through a [livejournal.com profile] fearlessdiva rec.

Your Draco is without question one of my favourites. Also, Dean Thomas was beautifully written. There are so many good things to comment on I'm speechless. Thank you for writing this and putting it up online to make people like me happy :D

I've friended you as [livejournal.com profile] abovedraco - not to be friended back, just so's I can keep up with your work! Hope that's OK ^-^

Of course it's okay! Welcome.

From your journal(s), I think you'd like A.J. Hall's HP fics, which I've indexed here:
http://www.livejournal.com/users/geoviki/6442.html

If you indeed haven't read these, I'd suggest starting with "Lust Over Pendle".

Wow I read LoP in one sitting - that was marvellous! Yes I tend to prefer clever implicit fics. What an excellent cast of characters - I adore her Narcissa.

I'm sorry, did you hear me say you could stop there? Hem, hem...

No, you must at least read "Not A Whisper", which is my all- time favorite comfort fic. And you absolutely must read "Dissipation and Despair", which is even longer than LoP. No, wait, you must read all of it. I command you, my minion. Go! Read!

Do not pass go. Do not collect $200.

Happy Fanniversary (a little late)! You and I came into this fandom right around the same time, though you started writing before I did. You have been one of the people here I've been most pleased to know. I'm thrilled to be part of the fandom where you have made yourself such a cozy home.

Much love,
Melinda
