Amazing and talented
Jun. 27th, 2004 12:07 pmThere are so many HP fandom authors who leave me holding my head high, not at all embarrassed to say to people, "Yes. I write Harry Potter fan fiction. You should read some of the absolutely breathtaking things out there. These authors make me proud to be in the same fandom."
I won't make a list because I'm afraid I'll miss someone who knocks my socks off, but you know who you are.
I will talk about one in particular, though.
helenish
She writes the most exquisite stories I've ever read anywhere. Two things in particular do it for me: her dialog and her characterizations.
She writes dialog the way people actually talk - the stops and starts, the things her characters try to say, but do it awkwardly, honestly, painfully. The things they leave unsaid.
And her characterizations are heartrending, truthful, wonderful. Damaged people. People who try to connect, fail, then try again.
Her web site is here: www.helenish.net (fixed!)
She writes in other fandoms; ones that I don't follow, but wish I did if only to connect to more of her writing. It's like finding out my latest true love is still dating others, but I'm grateful for the attention I get anyway.
Here are some snippets - maybe not the most definitive parts, but I don't want to spoil the stories for you. I want you to go read them!
A Quaint Notion - Ron/Draco
He didn't know why he was doing it, except that he did now, and every absence that Harry failed to notice had started to be balanced by the secret gleam in Draco's eyes when they ran into each other in classes, when Draco tended to say:
"Get out of my way, you rotten git," with a remarkable lack of conviction, by the way he squirmed and made breathless threats when Ron slid inside him.
Close Enough - Ron/Harry
"Mr. Weasley used Avada Kedavra in excess of six times," Walter said, shifting. "On international territory, and—"
"Walt," Harry said, easily. "These blokes were the real thing. They'd sacrificed so many goats to Mokkarean that there was a local hot sandwich shortage. I think you'll find that Mr. Weasley used justifiable force in a difficult situation, at great personal risk to himself."
"Be that as it may—"
"Walt," Harry said, once more. Within ten minutes, they were standing in the empty corridor outside, and Ron had been congratulated with what he could only assume counted as enthusiasm for Walter, on his bravery and general common sense.
Third Time's the Charm - Snape/Lupin
Lupin was waiting for him outside his last class. There was a very distinct bite mark high on his neck.
"You could have waited in my rooms," Severus said, standing as far away from him as he could without having to shout. "I don't care to have my—my personal life advertised—"
"I wasn't certain I was welcome," Lupin said. Several of the wall-sconces that lit the narrow corridors of the dungeons had been blown out; in the uncertain light, Lupin could nearly have been seventeen again. Seventeen, and they could hardly know each other, brought together by a few cruel pranks. Severus blinked, and Lupin was Lupin, the fine network of wrinkles around his eyes, the pale streaks of grey at his temples.
"You're too thin," Severus said. "You should eat more."
"I—" two students skittered by, giving them both cautious looks. "Come back to my rooms," Lupin said.
Severus opened his mouth to say no. "Yes," he said.
Reparations WIP - 7 parts so far, in her LJ - Neville/Draco
Neville licks his lips and pushes himself up to lean against the wall, knees bent. After a moment, Draco sits up as well. Neville laughs, a strange little huff of breath, and touches his nose, gingerly, wipes at his mouth with his thumb and stares at the blood on his hand with equanimity.
The candles are still burning in the carcass of the chandelier, its arms bent and broken, scattered across the foyer, the marble of the bottom step cracked apart, the edge of the carpet starting to smolder.
"Come here," Neville says, but kneels up towards Draco instead, pulling his wand. He holds it awkwardly, in his left hand, and uses the other hand to trace the bridge of Draco's nose, across his knuckles. The skin mends.
"Don't touch me like that again," Draco says.
Neville nods.
Promiscuous Behaviour Unbecoming - posted in her LJ - Ron/Draco
Draco remembers when he used to wish Potter would die, in as painful and humiliating a way as possible, and, later, when he used to be petrified that Potter might die, that his changing sides had been the death knell for Potter.
He had been relieved to discover that he wasn't very important, in the scheme of things.
