One of the delightful things that happens to me from time to time is finding a treasure of a story that's been around a while. I've read some great things this week and I'd like to talk about one in particular.

Isis recced [livejournal.com profile] iibnf a few months ago but I was too busy writing to read. Actually, when I saw the pairing, I thought - well, uncharitable things. I thought I'd rather sort socks. Or alphabetize my spice drawer.

Snape/Hagrid

Uh-huh, what did you just think (especially all of you new H/D friends)? See?

But on my last LJ entry about comfort fics, someone recced Care of Magical Creatures as one of their favorite fics, so I finally checked it out.

And adored it.

Of course, I started out a skeptic. Hagrid is a non-sexual character to me. I never include him because I can't write his dialect. But this fic spoke more to its theme than to its pairing; that's actually a poor description, because the fic is really all about the pairing. Hagrid courts Snape.

"What exactly are you looking for, Hagrid? Before we commit to any further course of action, I want to know exactly what is expected."

Looking down at his hands for a moment as if collecting his thoughts before entering high level negotiations, Hagrid replied: "I jus' wanteh take care o' someone."

"And you think I need someone to take care of me?"

"Yes."

Snape was silent for a moment. "Well, that was honest."

It's a beautiful theme of acceptance. Of how we all need and deserve to love and be loved. It stayed with me for days after I read it.

There's a sequel, too, with a clever way to express its theme that when we love someone, they are beautiful to us: Beggers May Ride

Also, s/he has written lots of little ficlets. I read them all.

Other thoughts wafting through the space between my ears: You know you are a fan when you see the date and think: "Tomorrow is Hermione's wedding day!"

If you liked that story, you might like [livejournal.com profile] predatrix's lovely Size Queen. Same pairing, and just as nicely done, in a different style.

Oh, you know how to get yourself a reciprocal friending, don't you!

What a lovely thing to see :D

I've heard of your fic, but it wasn't all about Snape, so I didn't read it, but I've heard it's wonderful from lots of people who read things that are not all about Snape. SO you are obviously very talented. You certainly have good taste! (Ha, oh, my ego. It will crush me one day). Have you written things that are all about Snape?

Snape Snape Snape Snape (Hagrid). I'm very focussed.

Viki is a devoted OTPist :)) But TBT is really splendid. Maybe you might give it a try, just for the sake of grown-up schoolboys? :)

Actually, I wrote the post first, then thought as to how I didn't even have you friended, I should remedy that. I'm very behind on my friend updating. And I managed to become one of your last 500 friends, so I'm happy for that.

On Skyehawke, I have my first short story which is all about the Snape guy. Called Chaining. (http://www.skyehawke.com/archive/story.php?no=599) It's wordy. And then I cannibalized it for ATBT. Which does actually have a lot of the Snape guy in it.

Love it - favourite bit - that Snape knew the when, where, who, but never the why. Clever little insight into Snape's psyche, that.

I wonder if you'll ever write a Snape/Hagrid? That would be so cool.
