Yes, the ending is the same - happy! In fact, most of the dialogue of the movie is directly from the book, and the ending scene is identical. My version of the book has a nice afterward by Forster, who explained a lot of the history of how he developed the characters and setting, and I think it's worth getting the book for that alone. He emphasizes that he wanted this story to have a happy ending, which he admits made it hard to publish since he was in essence condoning what was then illegal. Forster was gay himself, and I think that the story, while not a Mary Sue, had some wish-fulfillment to it.
