Let's hear it for the boys!

Amidst all the chaos of posting Delicate Sound of Thunder, I never had a chance to show off all the icons [livejournal.com profile] ravurian made for me; just the primary Harry and Draco one. Aren't these great? Isn't he talented? The one of Sully (post-Daniel make-over) is too much!

And it got me thinking... I always think of new LJ names as default female, but there are a plethora of men in HP fandom, too. So here's an attempt to list the ones I know. Let's hope I don't wholly embarrass myself by putting someone in the wrong column (or hope that I can edit fast enough so you won't notice). And I want you to help, too, by adding the guys you know of in the comments, 'k?

I'm not sure all of these guys are still technically in the fandom, actually, but on my list are [livejournal.com profile] aegeus, [livejournal.com profile] coffeesama, [livejournal.com profile] lightnote_blend, [livejournal.com profile] jiggery_pokery, [livejournal.com profile] malachan, [livejournal.com profile] owlman, [livejournal.com profile] slowfox, Alex, and [livejournal.com profile] tromboneborges. Cool guys, the lot of them.

Oops, closed too soon.

(1) Yeah, I do the same thing, assuming that new fandom names are female. I kind of like it - this is the most female-dominant space I've ever been in.

(2) Fantastic casting on the icons. Love the Hermione.

Thanks! A couple of them I knew but wasn't sure if they had been active in the past. Or fell into it because of significant others. Some new names to investigate, though!

I do not consider myself to still be in fandom.
Even if I do still talk to lots of people in fandom about lots of fandom things and also still read fic.

I try to keep a gender-neutral attitude toward lj names, but I do have a female bias. I've found that most people default to female, and upon finding out I'm male they tend to assume I'm gay.

I'm trying to think of other males in the fandom, and at the moment am only coming up with Jaig, who is mostly inactive fandomwise lately. (Not that I've been posting much at all the last few months, must change this.)

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2005-05-27 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
I don't assume that, because I know enough of the names on this list aren't. But I can see where that would be a double assumption, given the subject. I knew you were a guy because of the cute pictures you posted before Christmas. Oh, and the not-cute-but-in-pain one, too.

And I have been wondering where you've been; are you back home in mid-ocean?

gorgeous icons, and gosling as daniel is perfect casting.

I had a head full of DSoT while driving home last night. it was excellent. but I was disappointed it wasn't 10 times longer. :P

and, sorry, but I have no boys to contribute. my flist is entirely ruled by estrogen.

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2005-05-27 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
a head full of DSoT while driving home

Gosh, sorry. I think there might be some drug you can take for that....

disappointed it wasn't 10 times longer.

Yikes! By the time I wrote something that long, I really would be in the nursing home!

[identity profile] hearts-n-roses.livejournal.com 2005-05-27 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
The icons are incredible! I adore the Sully one, and the H/D one. Hugh makes a lovely Harry and Boyd IS Draco. *sighs*

I just finished DSoT after re-reading ATBT and I owe you a comment, but I LOVED IT! So plotty and wonderful.

The only guys in fandom I know are already on your list.

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2005-05-29 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! Comments. Yeah, I live for them. I never thought I'd feel like begging readers for them, but damn, it's so silent there on Skyehawke. Glad to hear you liked it. Er, loved it!

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2005-05-29 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Happy birthday! Thanks for the boys! I can't remember if I ever knew mark356 was a guy. I'm careful becasue of marksykins!

Your icon never fails to give me a warm, fuzzy feeling - when I was home after the birth of my first child (now pushing 19) I got hooked on reruns of Bewitched, of all things. Must have been hormonal.

When I saw the banners(?) [livejournal.com profile] ravurian made I squealed in like a fan girl - very embarrassing for someone my age - because my mental image of older Harry is Hugh Dancy, such beautiful eyes and an expressive face. The direct link to DSoT even has the same images of Hugh and Boyd as the icon [livejournal.com profile] slytherinboyz made for me.

You can add [livejournal.com profile] flyngaimlessly to your list of gentlemen Lj users.

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2005-05-29 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
I bet I squealed louder, and I'm even older!

[livejournal.com profile] dalhessian and [livejournal.com profile] cadeyrn are probably the only ones on my f-list who would consider themselves in fandom.

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2005-05-29 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Added. It's fun collecting boys. Er. Boys' names, I mean.

[identity profile] lazy-daze.livejournal.com 2005-05-27 10:54 am (UTC)(link)
Also [livejournal.com profile] portkey and [livejournal.com profile] kenboy are guys on my flist I can add to the list :D

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2005-05-29 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
I'm amazed at how many guys there really are. Added.

*raises masculine hand*

Unfortunately though, the only male on my flist is [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge.

Erm, [livejournal.com profile] geoviki, it's nice to do, but what are the HP fangirls meant to do with the information? Hunt them down in packs?

*rubs chin thoughtfully*

You know, I've always sort of considered Eminem for Draco really.

*runs away*

Hunt them down in packs

Goodness knows it's what's normally done. A few times I've responded to polls or some such in a definitively masculine way and been inundated with questions about "how things work" from the slashers. They're always a bit disappointed to learn I lack experience with Teh Gay and don't plan to remedy the situation.

((A. J. Hall ([livejournal.com profile] ajhalluk) seems to lean toward Ziggy Stardust for the older Draco, and I think I have to agree.))

*waves* Also a guy. I mean, I prefer to transcend gender, but if I must pick in the binary, male it is.

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2005-05-29 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
Now, see, I've seen your name round these parts and never knew that you were he. Cool.

Holiness! That's quite a revelation! There are a couple of LJ users I've friended but didn't know they were guys! OMG! Here I thought they were girls o_@ *hehe*

*lmao* Sully's icon is teh hilarious!!! XD

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2005-05-29 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't Sully wonderful? Ravurian gave me a large picture of this, but it's overwhelming! Didn't want to give anyone a heart attack.

i, like you, always assume female, until proven otherwise. most of the fine gentleman you mention i don't know, most of the ones i did know, i knew their gender, only one surprised me.

love the icons. and i just finished dsot (i know, i know, i am soooo behind). love it. i think you should do a whole story with daniel as the center. i love him. have him meet a nice gay wizard. someone with class and style. [*giggle*] honestly though, i love the world and want to see your lovely daniel happy. the story is fabulous, had my hook, line and sinker. even though you gave us all the clues i hadn't figured out what was going on until you spelled (pun not intended) it out. love your writing. completely. adore it. you are v. talented, and you don't rely on jkrs world for your stories, you use hers to texture your world. really, can't bow down to you enough. ♥

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2005-05-29 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you. I never expected Daniel to be as popular as he's proving to be. It's a nice surprise. Maybe he can pick someone from the gay fans in this list (although not all are gay, of course.) I envision Daniel as someone who attracts men with his enthusiasm and sparkle, so I bet he won't be single for long. Maybe I'll recycle poor Levon from the last book, who was also treated so cavalierly by that cynical author-woman.

I was also curious as to your reasons for this post, and the breakdown; how are you defining fandom? do you mean both slash and het discourse? it looks that way. how then do the male participants break down in terms of that? it's a long held belief that slash fandom of course, is predominantly female, and that men in fandom conversely tend to hang around het (statistically most men are straight, therefore straight men do the het stuff.) it'd be interesting to see who identifies as a slasher/hetter/general fanficcer vs. gender identity or sexuality, and also who has written what: for example, male fen (me) who tends to write a lot of slash fic (but has also written het and femslash and gen) and as a result, objects to terms such as slash and slasher.

or you could just not bother. *G*

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2005-05-30 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha! You put my scientific curiosity to shame!

I wasn't thinking categories much, although I confess to some curiosity there. I could see where semantic arguments might become the focus (Just how slashy a writer are you? And just how gay are you? And what about the artists, who are always forgotten?)

I suppose I was starting to notice that I interact with more and more men on LJ and it occurred to me that with the anonymity of many of our usernames, there might be even more that I was unaware of. And one of my good male LJ friends was feeling a bit left out last week during a discussion on someone else's LJ where it was assumed everyone there was female.

(And BTW, welcome. I've read your LJ for a long time, and it's nice to have you here).

Hello again! I was just peering through your recent entries after reading your fic earlier. I also usually assume that people I meet in fandom are female, since that's the clear majority -- I'm certainly not offended when people assume I'm a girl.

There are also several people in fandom who don't like to be identified with a gender, or who don't care whether they're called 'he' or 'she', or something else along those lines. [livejournal.com profile] switchknife and [livejournal.com profile] alibi_factory come to mind, though I know there are more I'm not remembering at the moment.
