Time keeps on slipping into the future

All you peeps on my flist seem to every-so-casually mention trotting off to Trader Joe's. Did you know it causes me grief and woe? I stew in my blatant jealousy! For you see, the nearest Trader Joe's is a good 7 hour drive away (in Santa Fe, New Mexico, to be exact). I know it seems inexplicable that Denver doesn't have one, but alas, it is so. Hell, even my mom in suburban Detroit has one, and isn't that so unfair? When I visit, I have to be re-e-e-ally selective about what I buy or else I'll go over the suitcase weight limit. I usually go for the curry sauce.

There's an Ikea near my Mom's as well. Our nearest Ikea is in Chicago. As A.J. Hall knows (because I assured her of this very truthiness), Chicago is close to Denver, but not so close that I can zip those thousand miles to visit Ikea easily. And again, the only things I can buy while I'm visiting must be small; it's painful. I have quite nice bread-bag clips, for example. Oh, and teeny spatulas.

Spring is finally here. I know this because it's either 70 degrees or snowing, often in the same 24 hours.

Today was my retirement lunch at work. My last official day is Friday. Yeah, it's weird, but I only angst over the change about an hour a week these days. Mr. Geoviki pointed out that if my employer wants to offer me a great retirement benefit at this early an age, I'd be wasting it if I didn't take it. I like the way that man thinks.

Everyone asks me what I'm going to do now.

I do too.

No, not really. But some of the things on my list are kinda mundane (sell some stuff on Ebay), and some I can't discuss with the masses (finish a slash story and edit some yaoi).

But I do plan to post more! (oh, oops, maybe I shouldn't threaten you that way...)

you can always come visit me in San Jose and I'll stuff you full of Trader Joes foods ;P

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2010-04-30 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
And I even know the way! (sorry, couldn't resist)

Happy retirement! And, it's weird that my closest TJ is closer than your closest. (4 hours; doesn't really make it any more practical.)

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2010-04-30 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
It's not weird, it's wrong! Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong!

Someone told me they'd investigated our shocking lack, and it's cuz the TJ warehouses are too far away from us. We need a lifeline of them to reach us!

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2010-04-29 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
The Trader Joe's tease is so so cruel. I know because I was once on that end of it, no Trader Joes in the area, everyone bragging about their chocolate truffles and frozen pad thai...bah.

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2010-04-30 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
It's so hard when I actually visit one and see all the things I want but can't carry. No Two-Buck Chuck for me, no way. although once we brought home a case in a *cough*govvehicle*cough*.

[identity profile] libby-drew.livejournal.com 2010-04-29 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Ha! Sounds like spring in Pittsburgh.

Best of luck!

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2010-04-30 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
Just so you don't imagine I was exaggerating, it was 80 degrees yesterday, and this morning it was snowing again. It's usually not quite this...volatile.

Thank you!

It's not a threat; it's great to read your posts.

How fantastic that you can retire! You are retiring, I'm just about to start.

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2010-04-30 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
Sweet!

I really appreciate how very lucky I've been in my career choice. Believe me, I'm grateful.

[identity profile] pir8fancier.livejournal.com 2010-04-29 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Congrats on the possibilities of new adventures!

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2010-04-30 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! My last editing job (right after that lunch) was the author I like least, too, so I was looking forward to not doing his stuff any more. He's one of those guys who states and restates the obvious, interspersed with random factoids and way-too-vague generalizations.

Try editing a concrete textbook. I wanted to kill myself.

The nice thing about having friends in the Motor City, Viki is that we can shop for you and ship stuff to you. Let me know if you ever need a fix, 'k? :-D

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2010-04-30 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Awwww! Thank you.

[identity profile] meri-oddities.livejournal.com 2010-04-29 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Congrats on your retirement. That is so awesome! And I am so jealous! *g*

I saw you registered for Con.txt! Yay. I can't wait to see you.

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2010-04-30 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
This will be you soon enough!

Yeah, I finally worked out the crap around traveling to our family reunion, which was a big messy hassle. Now I can work on the next trip. The airfares from here to National are currently outrageous, so I may end up at Baltimore, but I'm really good at mass transit and do not fear transferring trains or whatever it takes. Or I might need to stop in Milwaukee or somewhere off the direct path.

[identity profile] meri-oddities.livejournal.com 2010-04-30 09:43 am (UTC)(link)
Regan National is right on the Metro. Baltimore is closer in miles and easier to get to by car. There is a train that will take you to Union Station and then the metro to Silver Spring.

If you come in to Baltimore on Wednesday, I can probably come get you. You could stay with me, but I'll be crazed. Thursday is hell. You can also take a cab from BWI to the con for around $50.

Don't come into Dulles.

[identity profile] mythnlynx.livejournal.com 2010-04-29 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
So funny. We got a TJ about a year ago, and I STILL haven't set foot in it. (Then again, I don't go into my local Starbucks, either.)

A reminder from the folks at Starmaker: they can't wait for you to join them!

Happy retirement!

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2010-04-29 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
O RLY? I am halfway through writing a trial entry for this week's theme of instrumentals. I really wanted to do one on Sugizo but my favs of his are from 2002. So instead...well, I'll post it here very soon and you can see! Squee!

And when I have more time next week I'll be posting more Miyamoto Kano on yaoi_daily, yes!

[identity profile] mythnlynx.livejournal.com 2010-04-29 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
So what's wrong with 2002? They don't hold firm with the "nothing too recent" rule, especially when it's something out of the ordinary. Tell you what, I'll PM you w/Darius' email, you can ask him any questions you have, and he can give you the info you need for posting access, coding, etc. (YAY!)

And more Miyamoto Kano? SQUEE!!!

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2010-04-29 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
Got the email! I went ahead and posted a trial here on LJ. If you can point Darius to it, maybe he can judge whether or not I'm a talentless hack I'd fit in at SMM.

[identity profile] mythnlynx.livejournal.com 2010-04-29 10:15 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, just read it--nice job! I'll send Darius the link right now.

(NO, you're NOT a talentless hack, I've read worse on SMM! And, btw, I LOVE Afro Celt Sound System!)

[identity profile] themostepotente.livejournal.com 2010-04-29 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
You're retiring! Good for you, Viki ♥

Come back to Michigan! We have Nino Salvaggio's, too, which I think is better than Trader Joe's!

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2010-04-30 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, I've never heard of that one. I'll have to investigate. :D

[identity profile] lalaith-niniel.livejournal.com 2010-04-29 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Ikea is coming though! It will arrive in Centennial in the fall of 2011.

And yes, I am putting off moving until then just so I can outfit a new place cheaply.

I do feel your pain on the Trader Joe's issue; some things just aren't fair.

Also, congratulations on your retirement!

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2010-04-30 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
It's soooo long to waaaaiiiittt! I feel like a kid waiting for Santa.

My daughter and I even investigated ordering online and having it shipped. Some things they'll do, but not the coolio furniture.

And thank you!

[identity profile] snottygrrl.livejournal.com 2010-04-29 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
i didn't mean to taunt you with the 3 traders joes that are about 10 minutes from my flat, or the ikea that's 20 minutes (she said crunching away on trader joes sesame seaweed rice balls ($.99 a bag)). i did rather miss both trader joes and ikea when i was in nz.

congrats on the life changing thing!

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2010-04-30 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
You...you are dead to me!!! Bwahahaha! (I finally get to use this icon, too).

I don't think asking for one TJs in the whole of metro Denver is too much to ask, right? Just one...

But we are getting an Ikea in 2 more years. *holds breath*

I'm happy for you, sweetie. And now you have so much free time that you CAN drive to Trader Joe's, you know. An overnight trip!

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2010-04-30 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
It's funny that nearly every place we vacation, we run across them. And we try to pick up a few things that we think will fit in our bags. Or we eat it right then and there.

[identity profile] bryoneybrynn.livejournal.com 2010-04-30 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
I miss IKEA. We're doing our first move with no IKEA in the city - an hour to the closest one. You don't realize how awesome it is until you want a Billy bookcase and have to settle for the short, crappy Walmart version. ;)

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2010-04-30 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
WE don't seem to have any places with decent, inexpensive stuff like, yeah, bookcases. It's not fair! *pouts*

Congrats on retirement!

I LOVE being retired!!

Back on the west coast (near TJ's and Whole Foods, Ikea and Andronicos) after several years in the Ozarks... where there is NOTHING in the way of good food stores (except for the local very pricey COOP).

Hope you enjoy your retirement as much as I have/am!

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2010-05-04 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm on day 2, and so far so good!
