geoviki: (OMG - WTF)
geoviki ([personal profile] geoviki) wrote2009-07-21 10:20 pm

Aaaaugh!

ZOMG! Just a quick post to say I'm home from Azkatraz. Last night there was a horrific hail/wind storm here, and what was once a pretty nice honeylocust tree in our back yard is now prostrate on the lawn (having barely missed the house, thank god), as are numerous trees in the area. Any summer flower (and my special daylily bed in particular) is trashed. No vegetable garden. There are just leaves everywhere - on the lawns, in the street, plastered on the house - and the whole town smells woody like fallen trees.

Pictures forthcoming. Until then you can read about it here. A lot of those photos are from right around me.

Great quote: "It was wild," the 73-year-old said as she surveyed the damage at her home on Jellison Street near West 32nd Avenue on Tuesday. "It was just like one of those Harry Potter movies."

Hey there! It was so incredibly amazing to get to talk to you, although the opportunity to sit down and have a real natter didn't really arise. I love the idea of catching up with you and the UK gang sometime before I need a zimmer frame. I have hopes.

You are an amazing and gracious lady. It was a real honour. :D

that is The Best Quote Evah!

sorry to here about the vegi, flower devastation and tree loss, but glad house is okay.

was great seeing you!

[identity profile] meri-oddities.livejournal.com 2009-07-22 10:02 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that wasn't a nice welcome home, now was it? Glad to hear your house was okay.

It was great to see you in SF.

[identity profile] teldave.livejournal.com 2009-07-22 10:50 am (UTC)(link)
Oh wow! What a welcome back that was! I just saw the Harry Potter movie this weekend and it began with devastation wrought by terror from the sky, and your post begins with devastation wrought by the very same...heh. See? Even that woman quoted knew what it really was about!

Glad you and yours are safe.

[identity profile] painless-j.livejournal.com 2009-07-22 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my. I'm glad the tree missed the house when falling! A storm at our summer house had the toilet cabin overturn once, and it's neither small not light :) not to mention that all flowers and fruit trees got broken, like at yours.

People tell anecdotes about you at the con ;P

I let her read the post I put up while we were still there. :P

And Ziki, I'm really glad that the tree missed your house, and that you're all OK. The flowers will grow back, thank God.

O.O Glad to hear house didn't get smashed!

Yikes! Glad that tree missed the house. Looks like others weren't so lucky.

[identity profile] lagreyeyes.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
Holy FUCK! That's what happens when they let those darned Death Eaters loose... *hides out in sunny So Cal*

Glad it was only the tree, not the house. ;-)

I love cons! How was Otakon? Did you venture in to see Vamps after all?

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
My husband said that a short hour later, the stars were all out like nothing had happened. Go figure.

I loved meeting you, too. I wish we'd had more time to chat, though. Next time, right?

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
We sometimes have pretty volatile weather, that's for sure.

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I was so happy that I got to meet you, too, plus get a photo of us together. I just dumped my pictures to my hard drive and keep thinking, didn't I take more? What was wrong with me!

[identity profile] calanthe-fics.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
The last week we've had what can best be described as tropical rainstorms. The only time I've ever seen prolonged rainfall like this was in Sri Lanka. The road outside my house becomes a river; I'm grateful the kerb is so high!

At least the frogs in our garden will be enjoying the wet.

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
It was great seeing you, too. You're like my touchstone of cons - it wouldn't be the same without you there.

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I had the best time ever this round! It was fun doing all those touristy things and going out to pir8's place and all.

Sucks to be back at work now. *iz sad*

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! Yeah, I loved that quote because it was so timely, for one!

[identity profile] photoash.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
On was great :) vamps played at concert hall on thurs I didn't make it there in time and u had to have tickets ahead of time

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
My husband had the kindness not to tell me about the storm until we were on the way home from the airport - I would have worried for nothing because it was all over and done by then anyway.

I am not as extroverted as Cordelia claims! I just like to talk to people in bars. Er.....

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I had the best time! I'm glad your car didn't get towed (it didn't, right?) And I will never look at a bottle of hotel mouthwash the same way - Cordelia and I nearly saved the rest of that bottle as a memento.

Your talk the next morning went exceptionally well. I enjoyed it so much. Wish I'd caught all of the others you did, esp. the reading.

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, what a mess!

Hey, I wanted to pass on that your presence in HP fandom hasn't faded even after all this time, and you are still discussed at cons with fondness by your old friends.

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, sunny Cal has earthquakes, sistah! And giant fires! You can't fool me!

We were sooooo lucky.

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
It's amazing how close that tree came - I'm going to go back and take a picture of the 1 inch scrape on the tree where it touched the house.

[identity profile] lagreyeyes.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
That may be, but my son is almost 13 years old and has never felt a discernible earthquake in his entire life! *knocks wood* (The last big quake was in '94 - we're due.) However, the fires have often gotten a bit too close for comfort...

You were indeed lucky. :-)

[identity profile] sesheta-66.livejournal.com 2009-07-23 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw ... bless her. ;)

Glad your house survived the fallen tree.

[identity profile] pir8fancier.livejournal.com 2009-07-24 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, husband got car in time. Thank goodness. The last thing we need right now is a $150 ticket and a $300 towing fine. Thanks for the pep talk about the writing thing. I just felt so unprepared that I was certain I sounded like a babbling idiot.
