I think the hp cliche site is actually fun - I know I use cliches and I think we all have to on occasion, given the restrictions of canon. Malfoy Manor being confiscated, to me, can be tossed in to show how vindictive the Ministry can be. IRL, the US government has confiscation down to a fine art in the case of drug dealers. They can take one's car, one's home, anything remotely associated with the drug dealing, and often without trial.
